There are over 2000 contemporary ceramic studios doing business in the world. The first contemporary ceramic studios first appeared in New York City about 1993. The Contemporary Ceramic Studios Association was formed in 1996 to serve the rapidly growing number of studios around the country.
Approximately 5 million people visited contemporary ceramic studios in 2005.

The term "contemporary ceramic studios" or "paint-your-own-pottery studios" defines primarily storefront studios that offer a place to paint bisque pieces with ceramic glazes. With a separate party area, the average studio seats up to 50 people but some seat as few as 20 people.
What is the best type of location?
Most studios are in an upscale suburban storefront or strip mall location. The most successful are usually in heavy foot traffic areas in entertainment areas (such as close to a popular movie theatre).
How much money does each customer spend?
The average sale is dependant upon the studio location and their pricing strategy. For business plan purposes, an average sale can be calculated by taking an average bisque price and adding 1 1.5 hours of studio time for a fee-based studio; or, just average the price of the bisque for all-inclusive.
What is the most effective way to promote my business?
Our research shows that print advertising in the form of flyers or community newspapers is the best value, followed by free publicity and charity events, scout troops, and radio/tv ads.
